Project Duration:
5 Weeks
Further Reflection:
In the future, I hope to reconstruct this concept to have the mirror display paired with a connecting app.
The Objective:
Humanize a household appliance and design a touchscreen interface for the appliance that has an iPhone-style touchscreen (with multi-touch) and no physical buttons.

The Approach:
The household appliance that I selected was the bathroom mirror since it's one of the first appliances that a person might use. For this project, I wanted to find a way to make the mirror a more efficient and helpful appliance while the user is either getting ready for the day or ending the night.

Discovery:
Mirror Research
Throughout the Greco-Roman antiquity, handheld were adopted by the Celts from the Romans. The backing plate of flat glass came into production in Venice during the 16th century, and the invention of glassblowing led to (i). Present-day mirrors are made by “sputtering a thin layer of molten aluminum or silver onto the backplate of a glass in a vacuum” (ii). A German chemist, Justus von Liebig, developed this process of a silver-glass mirror and allowed for larger scaled manufacturing. Making it “the first time in history ordinary people could buy a mirror” (i).
Mirrors also have superstitious ideas behind them, for example, if you broke a mirror it was believed that you have seven years of bad luck. This dates back to the Romans when they thought it took seven years for someone’s soul to “renew” or refresh (i). A trick to avoid bad luck was to bury all the pieces deep in the ground.

Qualitative Interviews
Key Findings:
      1.  Use it as a guide for what they're doing
      2. Look-up to use while shaving/brushing teeth
      3. Wish was able to multi-task (i.e. check the weather)

Define:
Mind Map & User Flow
In order to figure out the functions of the user flow and what to include for the mirror, the mind map was the first ideation for functions. It was the building block to creating the user flow and finalizing the functions of the mirror.

Ideate:
Ergonomic Notes
Taking a look into ergonomics and the basics to consider for a wall-mounted appliance was important. It was important to take note of how to not strain muscles and where to position the mirror for ideal comfort for the user.

Moodboard
It was important to focus on elements and colors that are interesting but still simple. For colors, I wanted colors that would be welcoming and that could stand out easily without intimidating the user.

Wireframes
As an introduction to wireframes, I tried to keep the ideas simple and straight to the point for the user. There was a clear path and the wireframes were a great way to get the ideas down before improving them or simplifying certain functions in the prototypes.
